2007: PORTHKERRIS Click on a photo to see a larger version. We were out on the Rib on the Saturday and due to the calm sea, loading the boat was very civilised compared to our previous year's effort! The first dive was the Mohegan which Dan and I managed to explore quite a large area of. The afternoon saw us at Vase Reef which is a lovely scenic dive where hardly any rock can be seen due to the sheer number of anemones everywhere - spectacular! Unfortunately there aren't too many photos as the visibility was about 3 metres all weekend. The shout went up as Dan and I surfaced - "Basking Shark!" - and when everyone had been collected, we tootled alongside the 4 metre shark for a while - it swimming along lazily feeding, and us frantically snapping away with our cameras. Momentarily another much smaller shark appeared, but it soon vanished when it bumped into the larger one! We knew the weather was due to become rough, but it was a lovely evening on the Saturday so I think all our hopes were raised. However, 2.30 in the morning it got ever-so slightly windy and there were several collapsed tents dotted around the campsite when morning came. The sea was still fairly calm when we loaded up the Cat Sunday morning. We dived the Volnay first, and then had a slow drift in the Helston River since the wind was picking up again. When we got back to the beach the sea was so rough it wasn't safe to unload the Cat so we all had to abandon ship and swim to shore, which was most entertaining! The not-so-fun part was the two hour wait for our kit to be brought round by road - it wouldn't have been so bad if we hadn't have left the car keys on board! Ah well, we shall know for next time! Thanks Simon for another brilliant trip! LP |
